Roodepoort parkrun continues to record milestones

While some parkrunners enjoyed their first parkrun and some regulars recorded their personal best times, Peter and George stood out for their outstanding commitment and were awarded Milestone Club recognition.

Event number 455 got underway on Saturday, July 23 as runners and joggers from Roodepoort parkrun took on their weekly challenge in the form of a 5km timed run on a meandering route.

The event at Len Rutter Park is for participants of all standards and takes place every Saturday at 08:00.

Peter Ngwenya who is one of the core volunteers from Roodepoort parkrun achieved his milestone of 150 runs and served his 86th volunteer duty on the day, while George Rockas also marked his 150th parkrun.

While some parkrunners enjoyed their first parkrun and some regulars recorded their personal best times, Peter and George stood out for their outstanding commitment and were awarded Milestone Club recognition.

At the beginning of July Glynis Tunmer kicked off the month with her 100th parkrun volunteering.

“We are forever grateful to Peter who selflessly gives up his time to volunteer.

“Committed volunteers like Peter make our parkrun happen. Another committed volunteer is Wendy Braun who has recently undergone back surgery.

“Although Wendy is unable to get down to parkrun during her recovery, she still volunteers and sorts the finish tokens, enabling all parkrunners to enjoy another event.

“We encourage and challenge each and every parkrunner to volunteer at least five times a year to give back to their event,” said parkrun Ambassador for the West Rand, Kip Norman.

Kip is responsible for the Roodepoort, Ruimsig, Sterkfontein and Delta Park parkruns.

Women’s Day will be celebrated on August 9, and Roodepoort parkrun will be a proud participant.

The community is encouraged to bring along a female friend, colleague or family member and walk, jog, run or volunteer together.

Just to be an important part of the Roodepoort parkrun community, every week after the event parkrunners chat over a cup of tea or coffee and exchange stories about their run that day.
