Poorte register convincing 46–3 victory over Alberton

Poorte find themselves having to face the hard to beat University of Johannesburg in the upcoming final.

Having had Springbok lock Johan Ackermann share his wisdom with the EcoRubber Roodepoort Rugby Club earlier in the week, Neil Kalify’s charges went into their match against Alberton Rugby Club determined to secure maximum points.

Saturday, June 4 saw the highly motivated Poorte side beat Alberton at Help24 Secure Park by a convincing 46–3.

The two stalwarts, captain Ronald Strydom and the hard-running eighth man Ruan du Toit were among the try-scores that saw their team outclass their visitors on most occasions.

Ronald and Ruan each crossed the whitewash twice while Brevan Herbst, Jason Freeman, Clinton Theron and Lindley Bubbles each scored one try.

The Man of the Match went to Jeandre van den Heever whose very high-quality ball carries were often devastating for the opponents, and he was just outstanding on defence.

One of Poorte’s players who has shown great improvement and consistency i Morné Piater who was named the club’s Player of the Month on Tuesday, May 31.

Johan (Ackermann) and Neil handed over his prize to him.

“Thank you Johan for the time and wisdom shared with our players last night, it was an honour and a privilege to have you join our players and sponsors.

“Thank you to eat@43 for hosting us and to everybody who attended,” said club chairperson Theuns Naude.

The day also marked a sad occasion as a moment of silence was observed when Poorte remembered one of their own, Nagel “Clooney” Niemand who succumbed to the dreaded Covid-19 a year ago.

Roxy Roux shared some words as they remembered their fallen hero, while Rene Benjamin organised the small tribute and Sportpro South Africa provided the framed memento which Nagel’s good friend Ian Pottas handed over to his family.
