Local dance champ to compete in the UK

Miya told the Northsider that she is humbled and honoured to have been given the opportunity to compete on the world stage, and any support will be greatly appreciated.

Dance is not just an art form but a sport that offers unique means by which one can explore themselves and their position in the wider world while opening a dialogue within and between individuals and communities.

Crawford International Ruimsig learner Miya van Niekerk has been selected for the South African team that will be competing in the World Freestyle Dance Championships in Blackpool, United Kingdom from June 24 to 26.

The 12-year-old Grade 6 learner holds the title as the Gauteng Champion for Freestyle Solo and has been awarded South African colours for both Freestyle Solo and Freestyle Slow dance.

She has met the criteria as outlined by the South African Dance Teachers Association (SADTA) and qualified to represent South Africa at the international event.

ā€œDancing is my passion, and my dream has been to compete at the World Champs. My trainer, Kyle Behrens has helped me make this dream come true. I am very grateful for this opportunity,ā€ said the Premier Champion Freestyle dancer.

The event is the world’s biggest Freestyle dance competition, and dancers from all over the world will compete for the title of World Champion.

It is for the first time since 2019 that this competition will be hosted.

Miya started ballet at the age of three and started competing in Freestyle dance at the age of eight.

She rose from strength to strength in 2021, and did not let the disappointment of 2020 get the better of her.

Through her determination to improve and to work hard even though Covid-19 halted sporting activities in 2020, the hard work has led to great achievements in 2021.

Although Miya has achieved several accolades in other dance competitions and styles, Freestyle dancing is her passion, and her dream is to continue dancing at the highest level.

Miya told the Northsider that she is humbled and honoured to have been given the opportunity to compete on the world stage, and any support will be greatly appreciated.

Funds raised through her BackaBuddy campaign ā€˜Get Mimi to Worlds!ā€™ will be allocated towards her flight, local travel, accommodation and food, visa, competition entry fees, dance costumes and grooming, and team tracksuit.
