Florida Cricket Club impresses the statisticians as business end looms

Team effort and individual contributions see club sitting in third place on log

Approaching the business end of the season, Florida Cricket Club has laid the foundation for a fine finish.

Having won four of their eight matches, with two drawn due to the rain, Florida currently sits third on the Premier League B log. With three matches left, the final push is on to secure a favourable slot for the play-offs.

Putting them in this strong position have been consistent performances from both the batting and bowling departments. Florida can boast three batsman in the top 10 of the Premier League B rankings and two bowlers joint top of the bowling standings. With the bat, Caleb Probert has averaged an outstanding 48 for the season which includes an impressive 107 away at Jeppe Cricket Club at the end of November.

Joining him in the top 10 is captain Deen Kimmie and Katlego Sempe in seventh and eighth spot, scoring a total of 227 and 202 runs, respectively. Deen has notched up a high score of 54 and an average of 37, with Katlego surpassing that with a high score of 65 and one innings where he avoided being dismissed, owing to his superior average of 40.

Taking the bulk of the wickets have been star bowlers Omar Kimmie and Junaid Batty, the pair being in a four-way tie for top spot having taken 13 wickets each. Omar has done so at an average of 16, with best bowling figures of 4/18. Matching him at the other end is Junaid, with an average of 15 and best figures of 5/34. All-rounder, Junior van Rooyen, has also pitched in with two 50s and five wickets from a season total of 15 overs bowled.

“Our players have put in a lot of effort this year and it shows on the scoreboard. It has not just been about individual performances but the whole team contributing when needed,” said the club’s chairman, Zaid Kimmie.

Just one point behind Pirates in second but 11 behind leaders Khosa, the race is on for a shot at 2022 silverware.
