Mavericks Volleyball Club trade the net for the tin cup

Club hosts second golf day at Eagle Canyon Golf Estate

Over 80 supporters, friends and associates of Mavericks Volleyball Club, and National Security and Fire took on the Eagle Canyon golf course for a charitable cause on May 22.

The golf day was the second of its kind, with sponsors National Security and Fire rolling out the red carpet in aid of three invaluable organisations. Over the past two years, Mavericks have supported and partnered with Johannesburg Council of the Disabled (JOCOD), Career Build and New Start Foundation. “Our players do not come from affluent backgrounds. These charities resonate with us as they create work opportunities for the youth and support the elderly, which are important things for us,” said Mavericks’ Nolan John.

JOCOD assist their disabled beneficiaries with opportunities that give them the platform to maximise their potential, and Career Build assist job seekers aged 17 to 25 by helping them choose career paths best suited to their unique talents, personalities and aptitudes. New Start Foundation is a community organisation that focuses on poor women and children, ensuring they have a safe environment to thrive.

Adding celebrity power to the golf day was Sunshine Tour professional, Dylan Naidoo, who joined the event as National Fire and Security’s ambassador for community development. “Thank you to National, who enable us to raise funds for our various programmes. They take community development seriously and that is why they came on board to support us,” continued Nolan.

Based in Boskruin, Mavericks’ league games have been on hold since March but that has not stopped their community drives. Nolan concluded, “We are a group of players that have been together for over 20 years. Our main objectives are to support and develop volleyball in South Africa, and to promote and support the local community. We have a passion for sport, family and our community, and are committed to raising awareness through sport to support our communities.”
