Poorte to face Wits in first fixture

"We don’t really mind who we play against, as long as we are getting back onto the field. We know it’s getting colder so we don’t know for how much longer we are going to see rugby, but the most important part is getting back and doing what we do so well.”

The Pirates Grand Challenge competition received some positive news on 10 March as the community game moves closer to the start of the season.

SA Rugby announced that club rugby, from U/19 level upwards, will be permitted to move to contact training (Phase two of the integrated return to train and play) from Monday, 15 March, provided that all players had undertaken non-contact training for at least four weeks.

The Roodepoort Rugby Club will play their first match of the Pirates Grand Challenge against tough opponents Wits Rugby at Wits.

Poorte have been training since January and were approved for level 3 due to the great attendance of their players.

“With the games starting, everyone is excited and glad to be back. I can tell you that the players are really looking forward to starting the league.

“We don’t really mind who we play against, as long as we are getting back onto the field. We know it’s getting colder so we don’t know for how much longer we are going to see rugby, but the most important part is getting back and doing what we do so well,” said Club chairman, Mathys Booyens.

Good news came early for club rugby in the Golden Lions Rugby Union as the start of the preseason games kicked off on Saturday, 17 April between Pirates Rugby Club and Harlequins Rugby Pretoria.

Through their partnership with mobile sport broadcaster Sport and Entertainment International the game between the two teams was broadcast live, and marked the first club match in 25 years to be televised on SABC.
