Witpoortjie Bowls Club going from strength to strength

Witpoortjie Bowling Club has begun life after lockdown with success on and off the bowling greens.

By definition, clubs are meeting places for like-minded individuals who enjoy a good laugh while partaking in their chosen activity. They serve to create an identity that comes to symbolise a shared pursuit of greatness.

Witpoortjie Bowling Club has begun life after lockdown with success on and off the bowling greens. While numbers may have taken a hit due to the financial aftermath of the state-imposed lockdown, a core group of lively, energetic and jovial characters are keeping the club’s flame burning bright.

Taking advantage of the current state of affairs to plot a steady path to the future, the club has elected a brand-new committee. New club president, ‘Colonel’ Harold Sargent, is hoping to breathe fresh impetus into a club that still holds top-division status. “From almost 80 we are down to below 40 committed league players. We might have less but there is now twice the effort. Everyone is doing their part,” said a proud Harold.

On the greens, Witpoortjie Bowling Club remains a formidable force. At a recent novices tournament, the club was represented by three players making up the final four in the semi-finals. Werner Deideriks would walk away with the title on the day held at the home of their Discovery rivals. The club also boasts Protea representative, Wilson Muvhango, and winner of the national championship’s visually impaired section for an amazing 18 consecutive years, Tracey Smith.

The braai burns at every social evening which is held weekly, with the serious business of league fixtures done on the weekend. “We have a very welcoming atmosphere here and we treat everybody equally. It is a very positive place and we encourage people to come have a bowl,” said Harold. The open greens are a beautiful sight under lights, as are the jokes and comradery of members having a good time.
