Covid-19 parkrun update

There is a large number of parkruns with fewer than 500 participants, but there are also those with much higher numbers.

It has been a challenging period for parkrun South Africa and the country as the Covid-19 pandemic continues to halt the ever-popular Saturday 5km runs.

The country recently moved to Level 1 and there has been much excitement about the numbers now permitted to gather for outdoor activities, among them the Ruimsig parkrunners.

While this is a major step in the right direction, parkruns, unfortunately, are still not permitted under the current lockdown restrictions.

There is a large number of parkruns with fewer than 500 participants, but there are also those with much higher numbers.

The possibility of starting parkruns in more remote parts of South Africa has been discussed with the global parkrun team who believe that they can only start parkruns in regions that have distinctly managed provincial or territorial borders.

According to parkrun SA President, Bruce Fordyce, there is some excitement about the possibilities in Namibia and Eswatini.

“In the meantime, we have been working hard to keep parkrun vibrant and alive, and indeed we have a list of parkruns waiting to start.

“In addition, I am in discussions with the government about parkrun and I am very optimistic.

“As soon as I have further news I will update you. Once again thank you all for your continued support,” said Bruce.
