ProTouch takes on Tour du Rwanda

This 12th edition will see the return of a time-trial stage for the first time since the first edition in 2009, but this time passing through the Wall of Kigali.

The Honeydew-based outfit, ProTouch Cycling is currently doing battle at the Tour du Rwanda where they are looking to have a good start at the second Africa Tour of 2020 official road cycling rankings.

The 114,4km stage one of the tour kicked off at Kigali Arena and finished in Kigali Kimirinko, with the team lining up alongside 16 teams. Kent Main finished off in ninth position, making him the sixth African rider.

Stage two of the tour had a route that promised to be exceptional, however with long climbs on almost all of the stages and a total elevation of 17 000 metres, including 4 279 metres on the fourth stage and three other stages climbing over 2 500 metres, the route will definitely pose a challenge to the legs.

The team roster includes Kent Warwick Main, HB Kruger, Gustav Basson, James Fourie and newcomer to the team, 23-year old Ethiopian climber Hafetab Weldu.

Hafetab, who rode for Dimension Data Continental in 2018 and Bike Aid In 2019, joins the team with support from Africa Rising.

The goal at Africa Rising is to help develop more African Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) Continental Teams and African cyclists, in their quest to reach the highest levels of the sport internationally.

This goal, which is strategically aligned with ProTouch’s vision to enable more African cyclists onto the world stage, has resulted in collaborations to further the sport on the African continent.

“This strong line-up is eager to secure some new UCI points on the 2020 Africa Tour, and we are really looking forward to returning to Rwanda for this important race in our calendar,” said ProTouch’s Sports Director, Maxime Martin.
