The 2020 Golden Lions Rugby Union Club 7s tournament got under way on Saturday, 22 February during a two-days 7s spectacular at Hoërskool Riebeeckrand in Randfontein.

The tournament proved to be the fitting occasion for the Roodepoort junior outfit to display a great start to the season, and if anything they showed the heart of the Poorte players.

The clubs that participated in the tournament were Randfontein RC, Roodepoort RC, Pirates RC, Raiders RC, Wanderers RC, UJ Rugby, Harlequins RC, Wits Sport, Kagiso Sting and Germiston Simmer RC.

Poorte seniors had a good run and finished second in their pool after they thumped Harlequins RC to a convincing 58–0 victory.

The senior side went on to do battle against the tough-to-beat Wits side and managed to edge out the students by a well-fought 12–5 victory.

Poorte juniors had a successful campaign and registered convincing wins over Germiston Simmer RC, Kagiso Sting and UJ Rugby being the casualties.

This youthful Poorte team went on to triumph over the stubborn Wits defence to be crowned as the Junior Champions of the tournament by a 26–5 well-deserved win.

Brandon Roberts, the young Poorte player who showed some blistering speed and a devastating step, was named Junior Player of the Tournament.

Club Chairperson, Mathys Booyens said, “The tournament was well managed and everything just went well. I am very happy about the performance of our teams at the tournament, especially our junior side. Congratulations to them for being crowned champions.”
