On Saturday, 2 February, the Golden Lions Rugby Union together with Lions Rugby Company held their annual awards ceremony.

The Roodepoort outfit did not go home empty handed as they were awarded the Gold Cup Participation (Kevin de Klerk Trophy) for their competitive efforts.

Referee Awards went to Ashleigh Murray who won Woman’s Referee of the Year and Eduan Nel who was awarded Male Referee of the Year.

Poorte have made a lot of changes in their coaching structure for the 2020 season with Louw Parsons and Jacque Fourie looking to play a crucial role the club’s senior coaching unit.

The first round of the Gold Cup will see a predominantly young Poorte side doing battle with Springs Rugby Club away on 29 February.

“I’m quiet happy with the coaches that we have appointed for the 2020 season, I think we’ve got a good balance between youth and experience coming through, our main aim in the club is to build a club not a team and in order to do that we have to look at all aspects of the game,” said Club Chairman Mathys Booyens.

Earlier this year the club also welcomed one of their new coaches, Warren van Rooyen who will be looking after development of the junior players.

Warren who will be in charge setting up the U/19 Academy for Poorte is a Hoërskool Monument High Old Boy and a former Lions rugby player.

“Anyone that would like to join the club are more than welcome, our training times for the seniors are Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6.30pm while the junior teams train on Mondays and Wednesdays,” said Mathys.
