ProTouch pulls off a podium finish in Mpumalanga

Jaydé took third place right in the mix with World Tour riders that included defending champion Daryl Impey, and the new 2020 SA National Road champion, Ryan Gibbons of NTT Pro Cycling.

On 9 February, ProTouch’s Jaydé Julius managed to pull off another podium finish at the 2020 South African National Road Championships. The event was held at Swadini Forever Resort in Mpumalanga.

Jaydé took third place right in the mix with World Tour riders that included defending champion Daryl Impey, and the new 2020 SA National Road champion, Ryan Gibbons of NTT Pro Cycling.

A second to none effort from ProTouch’s James Fourie and Rohan du Plooy saw the pair staying away in a seven-man breakaway for the majority of the race. James was caught in the final lap and then Rohan just 500m from the finish.

The team finished off with four riders in the top 10, with Gustav Basson placed fourth, Kent Main ninth and HB Kruger 10th, while young Callum Ormiston finished 15th overall, and ninth in the U/23 Category.

“With the experience we have gained racing internationally this past 11 months, the race plan for the day was to take a chance and get two riders in the break [that could stay away], if the peloton hesitated in chasing it down,” commented ProTouch’s Team Principal, Tony Harding. “We are very proud of the team, riding as a unit today,” Tony added.

In the Individual time trial, ProTouch’s Kent took the bronze medal alongside World Tour riders, Stefan de Bod and defending champion Daryl.

ProTouch’s #InvestInTheDream campaign aimed at enabling talented athletes onto the world stage, is not only creating more opportunities for South African riders, but also lifting the level of local racing in South Africa.

ProTouch’s next stop is Tour du Rwanda – Africa’s Toughest Tour where they will line up against World Tour and Pro Continental Teams.

After Rwanda, the team will participate in the Tour of Taiwan, PruRide Philippians and Tour of Tochigi in Japan.
