Scholars make a big splash at Gauteng Schools Canoe League

Florida Lake Canoe Club had reason to be happy with quite a few achievements by their young paddlers.

Paddlers took to the waters of Florida Lake to compete in the annual Gauteng Canoe Union School League race early on Sunday, 2 February.

Paddlers from the Florida Lake Canoe Club (FLCC), (FLO West Rand paddlers), Dabulamanzi Canoe Club (DABS), Centurion Canoe Club (CCC), Victoria Lake Canoe Club (VLC), Academy of Canoe Development (ACD), and Soweto Canoe Club (SOW) participated in the school league.

The participants showcased their talents in the K1 singles race. The Guppy group (paddlers between the ages of six and 12) was the first to take to the water. After finishing their two laps, the U/18s lined up at the starting point, and were closely followed by the U/16s and U/14s.

Competition was tough, but FLCC had reason to be happy with quite a few achievements by their young paddlers:

• In the U/10 group, Chané Steyn, finished first with a time of 25 minutes and nine seconds

• In the U/12 group, Keegan Marais finished in 11th place with a time of 23 minutes and 32 seconds

• In the U/14 group, Ameerah Hank finished first with a time of 19 minutes and 14 seconds, and Matthew Marais was 10th with a time of 22 minutes and 25 seconds

• In the U/16 group, Kamilah Hank finished second with a time of 17 minutes and 44 seconds, and David Brown was fourth with a time of 17 minutes and 48 seconds

• Elliot Mambury finished fourth in the U/18 group with a time of 18 minutes and 27 seconds
