Informal settlements clash in Games 4 Change

Saturday, 26 October saw Region C host the Games 4 Change event at Ruimsig Stadium where the informal settlements in the region fielded U/15 boys’ and girls’ soccer teams and U/15 girls’ netball teams to do battle on the day.

Councillor Rene Benjamin said, “The main function of the event is to literally give back to the kids and allow them to grow into more than they currently think they can be. They had a good time, as one could see them dancing every time the music went on.”

The event was made possible by the partnership between Region C, TMT Sports Group and Philly’s Games.

Ward 44’s soccer team rose above the rest and was crowned champions of the Games 4 Change tournament.

On the netball side, Ward 129 proved to be second to none as they outplayed other participating wards to claim their well-deserved victory and be crowned champions.

Games 4 Change is an initiative of the City of Johannesburg’s Department of Sport and Recreation within Region C with the idea of getting the youth out of the informal settlements and providing them with the opportunity to play sport.
