FLCC takes bronze in the Gauteng Canoe league at the annual prize-giving

 

The Gauteng Canoe Union School League’s final race and annual prize-giving took place on 29 September at Homestead Dam in Benoni, where the junior paddlers were awarded positions, based on the accumulated points they had achieved.

Paddlers from Florida Lake Canoe Club also earned points which accumulated toward the club’s total and earned the club an overall third place. Soweto Canoe & Recreation Club came in second, and Dabulamanzi (Emmarentia Dam) took first place.

The results of the prize-giving are:

• Girls:

– Atle Maphanga (Die Ruiter School), in second place for U/10 girls for the year, with 78 points

РChan̩ Steyn (Florida Primary School) earned 62 points

– Ameerah Hank (Curro Aurora), U/14 girls, earned 130 points and won the girl’s division in that age group

– Kamilah Hank (Curro Aurora), the top finisher in the U/16 age group, earned 122 points

– Jamie Wellish, finished second in the U/18 female group, with 103 points

• Boys:

– Keegan Marais (Curro Krugersdorp), earned 61 points in the U/10 boys’ category

– Matthew Marais, competing in the U/14 age group, earned 44 points

– Davy Brown (La Salle College in Discovery), earned 79 points

– Sisanda Mthabela (Hoërskool Roodepoort) earned 65 points

•Top School paddlers in the league:

• U/8 boys – Josh Friedericksen

• U/10 boys –Aiden Honke, Nhlamulo Mahwayi and Kai Davis

• U/10 girls – Lorna Kernahan, Atle Mapanhga and Chane Steyn

• U/12 boys – Jess Webber, Luke Wilson and Matthew Wilson

• U/12 girls – Jennifer Edwards and Mireille Bruwer

• U/14 boys – Luke Salmon, Lynton Oelofse and Theo Dreyer

• U/14 girls – Ameerah Hank, Jennifer Stuart and Lungile Mahwayi

• U/16 boys – Finlay Leask, Adrian Rodd and Matthew Maccelari

• U/16 girls – Helen Jansen van Vuuren, Kamiliah Hank and Thembelihle Jokozela

• U/18 boys – Thabo Selela, Benjamin Mntonitshi and Kevin Asman

• U/18 girls – Joanna Ciolosz and Jaemi Wellisch

The canoeists’ points are also credited to the schools they represent, which led to Curro Aurora with 328 points being placed in 11th place in the league, Curro Krugersdorp with 131 points was placed in 18th place, La Salle College in Florida with 79 points, and Die Ruiter Primary School with 78 points ended in 27th position, Hoërskool Roodepoort with 65 points ended in 29th position and Florida Primary with 62 points ended in 30th position.
