Wushu athletes take over Poortview once again

It was overall a very positive day for the sport of wushu.

Following six weeks of special wushu training right around South Africa, the South African Wushu Federation (SAWF) has brought the campaign to a close.

During the campaign, the SAWF made a difference in the lives of hundreds of children around the country as they led their ‘Wushu 4 Change’ campaign in an effort to expose more people to the sport. The training was done in the Sanda Full Contact style of wushu, which is a key part of basic wushu training.

The special campaign finally drew to a close on 23 March at the SAWF headquarters in Poortview, with a special day of training, demonstrations, and workshops that saw people travel from all over South Africa to Poortview for the day. The day got under way at 8am with the commencement of self-defence training at the hands of some Protea athletes.

The Protea athletes belonging to the demonstration team then donned their gear to put on a stunning demonstration for the crowds in attendance to showcase the very best that the SAWF has to offer at 9am. Once the demonstration concluded, the rest of the day was spent carrying out more self-defence training as well as a special anti-bullying workshop in support of Human Rights Weekend.

Those who took part were also able to place their handprints in the colours of our flag on a blank South African flag to complete a stunning mural. The day also saw the holding of a ‘coinathon’ to help raise funds for the development of the spectacular sport of wushu across South Africa.
