Despite facing some tough challenges and having to deal with boat damages, the Florida Lake Canoe Club’s (FLCC) father-and-son duo successfully completed their first Dusi Marathon.
Patrick and Franklin Thomas finished the race in a time of 20 hours and 20 minutes (over the three days) and were very proud of their accomplishment. “The river was very technical with huge wild water. We also had some damage to our boat which slowed us down, but we did not let that get us down and we managed to complete the race and receive our medals,” they said.
This year’s marathon took place from 14 to 16 February and gave paddlers the opportunity to see why this race is considered the world’s toughest canoeing endurance event.
“The heavy rains caused huge, brown, mud-filled waves at various rapids, but the paddlers still enjoyed taking on the 120km challenge from Pietermaritzburg to Durban,” said Jennie Dallas the Gauteng Canoe Union Public Relations Officer.
