Launch of Poplar Street parkrun right on schedule

'This will be our 50th parkrun event in Gauteng'

The Poplar Street parkrun will be launched on 2 March at 8am, and will be the 50th event in Gauteng.

Kip Norman, the regional parkrun ambassador for the West Rand, urged all runners/ walkers who will be participating in the first event to wear red, and explained, “We want to make this event a red one because when runners/ walkers reach their 50th milestone, they become entitled to wear a red T-shirt.”

He added that this will be the third parkrun event on the West Rand, meaning that runners/ walkers are now spoilt for choice.

“The venue is the pretty Poplar Park on Poplar Street in Lindhaven. It will be a very flat, two-lap course that will be run on grass around the Princess Dam, and on some paths and concrete paving, and will also be pram-friendly. There is lots of shade on the route too. One dog, on a short leash, will be allowed per parkrunner,” he said.

Kip said that they are hoping for a lot of community involvement, and added that the parkrun is run completely by volunteers. “Without volunteers, there can not be a weekly parkrun.”

Runners/ walkers need to register at https://www.parkrun.co.za/poplarstreet and print out their barcodes before lining up at the start line for the event, and Kip said, “Our policy is simple; no barcode – no time.”
