Family and friends enjoy first FFC race

It was the first ever Family Fun Cycling race

Family Fun Cyclists (FFC) hosted its very first cycle race at Weltvreden Park Primary School on 9 February, giving families the chance to cycle together.

The race was open to all ages, with children as young as four years old able to take part in the races, which covered three different distances – 1km, 2km, and a tough 6km race. The 1km and 2km races set off at 7am after registration between 6 and 6.30am, looping in and around the immediate vicinity of the school.

The event was held to help raise funds for Welties, with most of those taking part being either teachers and coaches at the school, or learners and parents within the school. The 6km race started off immediately after the 2km, on the school grounds, and made its way out onto Rooihout Avenue before making its way around Weltevreden Park and the green belt.

The first rider to return to the school was welcomed with cheers by the families out in support of their loved ones taking part. Once the rest of the riders arrived, the stalls were all set up with all kinds of snacks, food, coffee, and everything needed to regain the calories they had burnt during the ride.

Some of the younger cyclists needed help with the final stretch of the race up Rooihout Avenue, leading to the school, with a number of dads giving their children a helping push up the hill. It was a heap of fun all round for everybody taking part, and the general consensus was a load of excitement and anticipation for the next FFC race at Welties.
