Golden Reef runners honoured at prizegiving

Rikus Kranhold was crowned Athlete of the Year for the third consecutive year

 

Golden Reef Running Club honoured their members for their hard work and successes during the year at their annual prize-giving.

The theme for the evening was ‘Survivor’ and the event was also attended by famous athletes René and Christine Kalmer. The members did not only receive various accolades and awards but were also treated to a dance display.

A variety of awards were given out on the evening, but the biggest winner on the night was Rikus Kranhold, who received 10 awards, including the Fastest male (21,1km), Fastest male (42,2km), First senior male to complete the Comrades Marathon, the Best senior male, the Most Improved male, the Most Versatile male, the Tri-athlete of the year, and the Cyclist of the year, as well as the gold medal for the 1 000km challenge. He was also crowned as the club’s Athlete of the Year for the third consecutive year, and will be the the club chairman for next year.

Rikus participated in the Two Ocean’s marathon, the Comrades Marathon, the Half Ironman as well as the Ironman African Championship, and also completed his 50th parkrun.

Zinelle Carstens won three awards, which included the Best senior women’s athlete, the Most Improved women’s athlete and the Most Versatile women’s athlete. She was also the winner of her age category at the Tinman Triatholon.

Peder Friman received awards for the Grandmaster male athlete as well as the Clubman of the year. He was the winner in his age category at the President Hyper, Om die Dam and Clearwater races and also completed his 100th parkrun.

Martin Jacobs received the award for the Last Reefer home in time, for completing the Comrades Marathon within the allotted time.

Des Hainsworth received awards for the Fastest woman (21,1km) and the Grandmaster women’s athlete.

Petrus Lefine received the award for the Cross-country athlete of the year, after being selected for the Central Gauteng cross-country team. He finished fifth in his age category at the Provincial Championships.

The event was concluded with a delicious dinner, and everyone had a great time.
