EWC Fight Night 10 a knockout for supporters

The event was the second time that EWC Fight Night was being held at Hyundai Weltevreden Park, after making the move under new ownership in October.

Fans of mixed martial arts were treated to a feast of entertaining, non-stop amateur MMA action at the Extreme Warrior Championship (EWC) Fight Night 10 on 24 November.

The event was the second time that EWC Fight Night was being held at Hyundai Weltevreden Park, after making the move under new ownership in October. For the evening, organisers had rounded up a total of 28 fighters to take part in 14 fights; nine preliminary card fights, and five main card fights with the final fight to decide the new Bantam Weight Interim Titleholder.

The evening got under way with a flyweight fight between Gerhardt Oberholzer and Khaugelo Moicheloa, which Oberholzer won by technical knockout (TKO) in the first round.

The first of two Team Mayhem fighters to battle it out was Jared Parsons, who lost to Mike Elliot by a second round technical knockout in the heavyweight division.

While the early fights were entertaining, the first fight to make it to the third round came in the form of the seventh fight, a match-up between Diego Bandu and Preston Vos in the middleweight division. The two fighters traded blows right up to the third round, with Bandu managing to get the final punch in to end the fight with a third round knockout (KO).

The main card fights got under way with one of the craziest knockouts ever witnessed by some of the sport’s most-seasoned spectators. With Lameck Kodzanga and Eduardo Barros trading a few kicks here and there, Barros grew tired of the back and forth, and with Kodzanga’s back to the cage he pulled off a 360° back-hand punch that knocked Kodzanga out in the first round.

The following fight between Adolphe Mukaba and Team Mayhem’s Morgan Hunter had a lot to live up to, and the majority of the home crowd rooted for hometown favourite Hunter. The fight didn’t last long however, as Mukaba soon enough pinned Hunter to the floor, exposed Hunter’s weaknesses in his ground work and won the fight through a first round TKO.

The next fight, between Toboho Ntene and Christian Lumaba, was named the fight of the night and was the second of the 14 fights to go to the judges’ decision . Lumaba emerged victorious by split decision after a fight that could’ve gone either way.

The final fight between Elie Godogo and Hugor Nzungu would determine the new Bantam Weight Interim Titleholder, and went all the way into the championship rounds. By the fourth round both fighters were stretched thin, and eventually Nzungu emerged victorious after a verbal submission which came from Godogo’s coaching corner.
