KJK judokas selected for Commonwealth Games

The team will compete in India

The hard work and consistency put in by the judokas from the KJK Judo Club throughout the year have been rewarded.

According to Sensei Katja Bruwer, nine members from the club, of which five are from Roodepoort, have been selected to participate in the Commonwealth Judo Championships. The championships will be held in Jaipur, India from 4 to 11 November.

Judokas will be competing in various categories, including pre-cadets (13–14 years old), cadets (15–17 years old), juniors (18–20 years old), seniors, masters (30 years and older) and visually impaired.

The following judokas were selected and will be competing a variety of categories:

• Dewald Schultz (cadet)

• Eugene Delport (master)

• Christelle Goliath (cadet)

Katja said that Dewald had represented South Africa earlier this year at the Cadet African Championships in Burundi, and this year will be his second Commonwealth competition. “In 2016, he competed as a pre-cadet, and won a gold medal,” said Katja.

Although Christelle participated at the Cadet African Championships in Egypt last year, this will be her first Commonwealth appearance.

Eugene, who started judo as an adult several years ago, also went to the 2016 Commonwealth Championships where he won a bronze medal in his category.

Katja added that she and Harm Venter were also selected as part of the team, but they will not be competing.

Katja concluded by saying, “I am very proud of these judokas and believe they will do very well. They have been working hard consistently and are well prepared for the event.”
