Allen Glen’s phenomenal rugby year continues

Two of Allen Glen's sides claimed victories in the cup divisions while the other claimed the plate division trophy.

Allen Glen High School’s rugby rugby teams have had a phenomenal 2018, and they further showcased this with stunning performances at the Hoërskool Zeerust 7s Tournament last weekend.

Allen Glen’s record-breaking year thus far has seen them have four teams in the Golden Lions Middle Schools League Finals, with all four sides winning their respective finals as well. They also played a pivotal role in the formation of the inaugural Championship Trophy tournament – a version of the Virseker Beker for middle schools.

The same four sides were able to make it as far as the semi-finals of the Championship Trophy, where only the first team failed to make the final. Of the three who made the final, two won their respective finals.

Allen Glen also had two sides take part in and win their respective pools in the Apcan Schools Rugby Series in August/ September.

Their dominance of the 15-man format carried over into the sevens format as well, as the first team ended as runners-up in the cup final of the Frans du Toit High School 7s Tournament, while the U/15 team won their cup final.

Allen Glen looked to continue their impressive sevens form into the Hoërskool Zeerust 7s Tournament held over the Heritage Day weekend. Allen Glen had three teams hoping to take home glory; the U/15 team, the Eagles (second team), and the Blue Machine (first team).

The U/15s were able to dominate their division, as they put their best foot forward to win the U/15 cup division. In the cup final, they found themselves up against hosts Hoërskool Zeerust, whom they were able to sweep aside with a score of 19–0.

The Blue Machine and the Eagles were taking part in the same division, and naturally played each other in the round-robin stage where the Blue Machine emerged victorious. By the time the finals came around, both Allen Glen teams were level on every other factor, and as the draw would have it, the Blue Machine found themselves in the plate final while the Eagles were in the cup final.

The Blue Machine faced off against Hoërskool Wolmaransstad, seeking revenge for their loss to Wollies in the Championship Trophy final. They got off to a disastrous start however, as Wollies found themselves 19–0 ahead at half-time. The Blue Machine turned things around in the second half however, and scored 31 unanswered points to emerge as plate winners with a score of 31–19.

In the cup final, the Eagles were faced with a mammoth task as they came up against Zeerust’s first team. The game was naturally incredibly tight and tense, but the Eagles were able to emerge as 12–0 victors over Zeerust, to claim the cup title.
