Two for two for Allen Glen at Apcan School Rugby Series

Allen Glen High School's first team defeated Randpark Ridge High School for their second victory in this year's Apcan School Rugby Series.

After sweeping aside Hoërskool President in their first match of the Apcan School Rugby Series, Allen Glen High School made it two for two, with a win over Randpark Ridge High School.

For the 26 schools who are taking part in this year’s Apcan School Rugby Series, the two-week long tournament grants coaches the perfect opportunity to start testing players for their first teams next year. Grade 12s are not allowed to take part in the series, and therefore a number of U/16 players have been called up to the schools’ respective first teams to try out for a permanent spot in next year’s first team.

Allen Glen was one of those schools, and got their series under way with a 14–3 victory against rivals Hoërskool President at Ruimsig Stadium on Tuesday, 27 August.

They continued their campaign with a match against Randpark Ridge High School, again at Ruimsig Stadium, a clash which is always hotly contested. The game lived up to expectations, as Allen Glen took an early lead with a try within the first 10 minutes.

Randpark responded with a penalty to trail 7–3, before scoring a try to take an 8–7 lead, but it wasn’t long before Allen Glen scored a try of their own to go 12–7 ahead at half time.

The second half was much lower-scoring than the first, and was also very evenly contested. Allen Glen drew first blood through a try directly under the posts, which was duly converted. Both sides’ defences were rock-solid, as not a single point was added to either sides’ totals until the last minute of the game, when Randpark crashed over the line.

The conversion was missed, but it would not have made a difference to the result, as Allen Glen were victorious with a score of 19–13. Allen Glen’s next match in the Apcan series will take place on Saturday, 1 September against Trinityhouse Randpark Ridge at Allen High School.
