Head down to Wits this Saturday to support Poorte in their final clashes

Poorte's 1st and U/19 sides will be playing in the finals of the 2018 Pirates Grand Challenge later this afternoon.

Two of Roodepoort Rugby Club’s teams are facing tough opposition in the finals of the Pirates Grand Challenge today, and would like everyone who can to make the trip to Wits to back our boys.

The U/19 and 1st teams faced Randfontein Rugby Club and the University of Johannesburg respectively in the semifinals last weekend. The U/19s had the easier task by far, as the 1sts were up against a UJ side which had already defeated them twice in the season, finishing top of the log with 61 points – 20 clear of Poorte, which had 41 points in fourth place.

But both sides swept aside their opposition as the Poorte U/19s defeated Randfontein 45–15 at the University of Johannesburg stadium, and the 1sts beat home side UJ by 27–7, thanks to a strong performance.

Their respective victories subsequently booked the teams’ places in the finals, which are to be played at the University of the Witwatersrand later today.

The U/19 team will face Pirates Rugby Club at 3pm. Poorte has already beaten Pirates by 17–15, and lost to them with a score of 15–19, this season. Pirates secured their spot in the final with a strong 46–12 victory over Raiders Rugby Club.

At 5pm, the 1sts will meet with the University of Potchefstroom, who defeated Wits 13–0 in their semifinal. This means that the final will be played between the two teams who were placed fourth and third on the log respectively.

It will be an intriguing encounter, as Poorte defeated Pukke at home, but lost to the varsity boys in Potch, setting up an evenly-weighted contest. Poorte will be playing for its 10th PGC title (the first since 2013), while defending champions Pukke will be aiming to defend their 2017 triumph while going for their ninth title overall.

If you are a fan of Roodepoort Rugby Club, then you best get down to Wits to back the boys from Ruimsig, who will be in need of some strong support from their fans.
