West Rand bowlers did well at Disability National Championships

They brought four medals home

Even though they could not top their achievements of the previous year, they still managed to do well at this year’s Disability National Championships.

Ten visually impaired bowlers, and their directors, from various parts of the West Rand, managed to bag four medals at this year’s championship that took place in George.

At last year’s championship, the team won eight medals, and were also crowned as the joint champions with the team of Peninsula, but they did not manage to defend this title this year, and Peninsula walked away as victors.

Derek Carter won a bronze medal in the B1 singles category, Chris van der Merwe won a bronze medal in the B2 category, Salomé Morries won a gold medal in the B4 category and Derek Carter and Tracey Smith won a gold medal for pairs in the B1 category.

Derek, the chairperson of the Central Gauteng Association (CGA) for the blind and partially sighted, said, “Even though we did not improve on last year’s results, every bowler did his/ her best, and we still managed to bring home some medals. All the hard work has definitely paid off.”
