UJ do the double over Poorte who remain in Gold Cup spot

Unfortunately for Poorte, not even the third team was able to rescue points for the men from Ruimsig on the day.

Roodepoort Rugby Club suffered its second loss of the season against University of Johannesburg (UJ) last weekend, going down by eight points.

The day out at UJ on Friday, 20 July did not go as planned for Poorte’s U/21, third, second, or first teams as all four teams went down to strong UJ performances, with three sides suffering their second loss of the season against UJ.

First up was the U/21 side which has consistently failed to find its feet this season. The team was once again unable to do so and suffered a 12–43 drubbing at the hands of UJ.

Next up was the third team, the only side to defeat UJ earlier in the season. The team was hoping to do the double over the varsity boys, but, sadly for the Poorte side, UJ seemed to step up this time round, running out narrow 8–12 victors.

The second team suffered their second whitewash defeat in a row, going down 0–50, with UJ rubbing salt in the wounds after Poorte were defeated 0–31 by Pirates last week.

Poorte’s 1st XV went into the clash with UJ on the back of two strong wins against Raiders and Pirates respectively, but were still without the competition’s top points scorer, centre Stokkies Hannekom. Poorte put in a much stronger performance against a youthful UJ side than the first time the teams clashed.

However, despite an improved performance, the away side were unable to churn out a victory as UJ ran out 20–28, a much-improved result for Poorte who were beaten 30–40 the first time around.

Hannekom, who has been out with a knee injury for over a month already, still remains top of the Pirates Grand Challenge top points scorer’s list with 103 points, while Poorte First XV’s Dwayne Pienaar is second on the top try scorer’s list with 11 tries for the season.
