Goals met by local runners during Comrades

The Eagle Canyon-based club had 21 runners compete in and complete the gruelling 90,184km leg race which started in Pietermaritzburg and ended in Durban on 10 June.

Despite leaving KwaZulu-Natal with weary legs and bodies after the Comrades Marathon, the athletes from the Panorama Running Club accomplished their mission.

The Eagle Canyon-based club had 21 runners compete in and complete the gruelling 90,184km race which started in Pietermaritzburg and ended in Durban on 10 June.

Moses Phiri was the recipient of a green number after completing his 10th Comrades Marathon.

The club achieved a 100 per cent success rate, something not too many clubs can boast about.

Part of the success story, the two novices Xana Cloete and Austin Dlamini, were able to complete their first Comrades within the specified time. The back-to-back medalists Mikiel Penyani, Priyanka Moodley and Simangele Nanjee added to their tally of medals, and Sharon Hempel and Moses Phiri both completed their 10th Comrades and earned their very special Green Numbers.

There were other proud moments during the marathon which took social media by storm, such as the one-legged Xolani Luvuno who completed the race on crutches; Bongumusa Mthembu, who made history by winning the Comrades for the third time (albeit years apart) and Ann Ashworth from Johannesburg, who won the women’s race.
