Weight costs boxer the title

Prince Dlomo forfeited the title after failing to meet the required weight standard.

A chance for Team Dida Boxing Promotion to secure another title for their camp fell short when Prince Dlomo failed to make the required weight.

Dlomo, a very skilful boxer, clashed with Gabriel Imalwa for the vacant World Boxing Federation (WBF) Intercontinental Lightweight title at a tournament in Sandton on 18 May.

Imalwa had no chance against Dlomo, who ended the fight with a technical knockout in the sixth round.

However, Dlomo’s victory was short-lived.

His manager, Dida Dipheko told Northsider that they had little time to prepare for the fight. “He [Dlomo] had to lose 8kg within three weeks to qualify to fight in the lightweight division. We did all we could to get him into shape in time for the fight. Although Dida was still 40g over the weight limit, the fight was allowed to continue on condition that if Dida won, he would have to forfeit the title. However, should Gabriel win, he would become the titleholder,” said Dipheko.

When asked if Dlomo would have another go at the title, Dipheko said they were now aiming for the SA title.

Dlomo’s win brought his record to 10 wins in 17 fights, according to BoxRec – Boxing’s Official Record Keeper.
