Team West hosts successful GMCA competition

The event, hosted by Team West (Laerskool Roodebeeck and Helderkruin), was held at Ruimsig Athletics Stadium. It was a hive of fun and entertaining activities.

Elements of dance, acrobatics and shining costumes characterised the Gauteng Majorette and Cheerleading Association competition on Saturday, 12 May.

The event, hosted by Team West (Laerskool Roodebeeck and Helderkruin), was held at Ruimsig Athletics Stadium. It was a hive of fun and entertaining activities.

The stadium played host to a number of majorette and cheerleading teams from 35 primary and tertiary schools from across the province. Most of the day they put on amazing routines that swept spectators off their feet.

They competed in various categories, including girls-only cheerleading, small and large Co Ed (mix) cheerleading and President’s League large drill.

Laerskool Roodebeeck was the only side that represented Team West as the Laerskool Helderkuin team was unable to perform, following the exclusion of their category.

After the event, Tammy van Loggerenberg, the Team West coach reflected on the pleasing performance by her side.

“Roodebeeck really pulled through and showed them what they got. Helderkruin, unfortunately, could not perform as their category was not included. All in all, it’s been a very good competition,” she said.

She elaborated on the uniqueness of this sport. “It’s a unique sport. It obviously teaches the children discipline, just as in netball and hockey,” she added.

The great performance from Team West also served as preparation for the provincial tournament to be held in two weeks’ time.
