Danie van Zyl boasts two new SA champions

Wrestlers win nine medals at SA Championships

Wrestlers from the Danie van Zyl Wrestling Club participated in the South African President’s Championships that recently took place in Pretoria.

The wrestlers won a total of nine medals – two gold, four silver and three bronze – and the club gained two new South African champions. Terence Junior Esterhuizen won a gold medal in the 38kg Greco-Roman style category, while Darren Dickman won a gold medal in the 41kg Freestyle category.

Other achievements include:

• Darren Dickman – one gold and one silver medal

• Daniel Mashinini – two silver medals

• Christopher Schaper – one silver and one bronze medal

• Johnny Esterhuizen – one bronze medal

• Kenney Siyabonga – one bronze medal

Keiran Volschenk, Dominick Aoun and Quinton Senekal also competed.

Coach Danie Erasmus said that he was very proud of the wrestlers who participated in the championships. “We have been working on this project for the past seven years, preparing the wrestlers for the championships, and, even though they have participated in tournaments before, they had not previously won any medals. We have been focusing on winning medals for the past three years, and the hard work and dedication has paid off during the past two years,” he said.

He added that he believed these achievements serve not only as motivation, but also as inspiration, and said, “When the other wrestlers see these achievements, it motivates them to train harder, in order for them to also be able to accomplish the same achievements. They put in a lot of hours and hard work, and are extremely dedicated. I believe that we still have a lot to achieve, and our aim is to become one of the strongest wrestling clubs in the Central Gauteng district.”

The next big competition for the wrestlers will be the South African Senior and Cadet championships in June.
