Discovery hosts Masters tournament

17-year-old becomes youngest-ever winner of tournament

The annual Open Masters tournament was hosted by the Sables Players Association at the Discovery Bowling Club.

The tournament, which is one of the District’s most prestigious ones, did not disappoint, as 11 of the top men and women came together to battle it out for the title over two days.

In the men’s final, Tony Doyle from Ruimsig Bowling Club took on Mike Marnewick from Leases Bowling Club. The pair kept the spectators on the edges of their seats, but in the end Tony edged Mike out and won the gold medal with a score of 21–18.

Tony Doyle won the gold medal match.

Morgan Muvhango from the Discovery Bowling Club comprehensively beat fellow club member, Mark Richardson, with a score of 21–8, to win the bronze medal.

In the women’s final it was another home ground battle, with Kimberly du Preez taking on Rika Lynn. Kimberley managed to beat Rika with a score of 21–7, taking home the gold medal.

With this result, the 17-year-old became the youngest-ever winner of the Open Masters championship. She was also the first invitation player to be crowned champion since the tournament was first played in 1982.

Two bowlers from Leases Bowling Club, Lynne Marnewick and Yolandé Simmelink, played each other in the bronze medal final, and Lynne came out on top with a score of 21–17.

Yolandé Simmelink played in the bronze final.

This was the third big competition held at local bowling clubs.

It follows the Seniors Masters competition which was held at the Discovery Bowling Club late last month.

In the Senior Men’s category final, Discovery Bowling Club’s Piet Steyn claimed victory over Herbie Fox from Ruimsig Bowling Club while Ruimsig Bowling Club’s Mariaane Spamer beat Noordheuwel Bowling Club’s Mary-Anne Scheepers in the final to win the title.

On the same day at Witpoortjie Bowling Club, the Invitational Masters competition took place. In the men’s final, Rustenburg Bowling Club’s Jaco Diedericks beat fellow club member Dunstan Nel and in the women’s final, Leases Bowling Club’s Yolandé Simmelink beat Discovery Bowling Club’s Kimberley du Preez.
