FLCC paddler gears up for SA sprint championships

Emile gains valuable experience during race

The Florida Lake Canoe Club (FLCC) recently hosted the Gauteng Sprint Championships at the Roodeplaat Dam.

“Sprinting is an Olympic discipline and is therefore the most highly regarded discipline in canoeing, although it is not as much fun as paddling on a river,” said Jennie Dallas from FLCC.

She added that sprinting is hard work, but the basis of fitness and speed that stem from a good sprint background can be successfully used for marathon races during the winter season.

Emile Theunissen from FLCC competed in the Senior age category at the championships and was pitted against a team of Hungarian sprinters who were training in the area for a few weeks.

Emile finished as the fourth senior, but was the first South African finisher in his age group. He finished in a time of four minutes and 19 seconds in the 1 000m, two minutes in the 500m and 49,40 seconds in the 200m sprint events.

Jennie concluded by saying, “Paddlers throughout South Africa are gearing up for the South African Sprint Championships inter-provincial event which will be taking place during the Easter weekend at the Roodeplaat Dam.”
