Florida paddler finishes the surf ski race

A day filled with lots of laughter and fun

Paddlers had a lot of fun at the recent surf ski championship that took place at Emmarentia Dam.

The event was hosted by the Dabulamanzi Canoe Club, and is the world’s only High Altitude Surf Ski Championship that takes place far from the coastline.

According to Jennie Dallas from the Florida Lake Canoe Club (FLCC), the race is a lot of fun with a festive atmosphere. She said, “The bagpipes played along the banks while ducks hurriedly scuttled out of the way of the waves created by the jetskis. There were even a few blow-up sharks planted around the dam! Quite a few paddlers also tipped over when they were hit by the side-on waves, filling the day with much laughter and fun.”

The official ski race was a 10km course while the Stand Up Paddler’s course was shorter and more informal – consisting of six man crews on a blow-up just having some surfing fun.

Emile Theunissen from FLCC enjoyed trying out the Stand Up paddle board, and also raced in the Single Ski category, finishing in 48 minutes, resulting in a fifth place.
