Roodepoort Rugby Club extend homeground dominance

Roodepoort Rugby Club welcomed hundreds of supporters to yet another successful home match day on Saturday, 10 March.

This time around, Poorte took on the teams all the way from Middelburg Rugby Club at Allen Glen High School. Yet again they showed prowess on the field.

The day kicked off with a few hours of touch rugby. Anybody from anywhere who wanted to take part, could do so.

Following the touch rugby, the U/21s kicked off their match against Middelburg and put on a dominant performance.

The match remained in Poorte’s favour throughout with the local boys coming up trumps 48–7 thanks to an impressive showing.

Following the U/21s’ victory, the Poorte second team took on a Poorte Barbarians side made up of players from the third and U/21 teams.

The second team managed to trump the Barbarians in a well-contested match.

The final match was not as easy for the first team. They had a poor first half, trailing by 10–14 when the whistle blew.

Following a strong motivational speech by coach Alwyn Hollenbach at half time, the 1st XV managed to score 24 points in the second half to come out on top by 34–18.

Unfortunately, Poorte’s lead could again have been much larger if their conversion kicks had not let them down again, with four being missed. The kickers’ performances were however much better than in the previous match, proving that they were putting in the hard yards at practice.

Overall, the day was a roaring success, with families all around to enjoy a brilliant day of rugby.
