Poorte make strong start to home season

Roodepoort Rugby Club welcomed Kempton Park Wolves for their first home matchday of the pre-season on Saturday, 3 March.

Roodepoort Rugby Club kicked off its first home match day of the pre-season with a morning sevens tournament for primary schools.

The first Poorte game kicked off at 1.30pm with the Poorte third team taking on the golden oldies and claiming bragging rights. Kalla Barnard was the oldies Man of the Match and the third team’s Wessel Barnard secured the same title.

Next up was the stellar U/21 team that had finished the 2017 season unbeaten in their previous age group/s.

They put on a strong performance and managed to come out on top against Kempton Park by 29 points to 19, with Nico Fouche claiming the Man of the Match award.

Next up was a tough, physical, second-team match.

Despite it being a tad scrappy from both sides, Poorte won the game 19–17 despite two late Kempton tries.

The first team absolutely dominated their game, managing to run in 10 tries to the Kempton Park Wolves’ four.

Both sides’ kickers were not in the finest form, with Poorte only converting three tries, and Kempton only two.

Owing to the brilliant passing rugby exhibited by Poorte, they thumped the Wolves 56–24.

Dwayne Pienaar was named Man of the Match.

Overall, the day was thoroughly enjoyed by all the spectators who were able to keep the heat at bay thanks to a refreshment tent next to the braai area where they could purchase braai packs.

Roodepoort Rugby Club will be taking on Middelburg this Saturday, 10 March at Allen Glen High School, so be sure to come out in your numbers and support Poorte.
