Chatter, banter and bowling as Florida North Bowling Club hosts a fundraising Ladies’ Day (WEB)

Annual Ladies' Day a great success

The bowling greens were filled with excited chatter, some light banter and a lot of laughter during the annual Florida North Bowling Club’s (FNBC) Ladies’Dday.

The event was attended by 96 women from clubs all over the West Rand, including Krugersdorp, Witpoortjie, Florida, Discovery, Honeydew, Leases, Randfontein, Noordheuwel, Linden, Randburg and Fochville.

“Matches were played between 24 teams, each consisting of four women of different ages. The day’s activities started at 8am with a delicious breakfast, and the matches took place from 9am until noon. Afterwards, lunch was served.

We also had a prize-giving, and every member of the various teams received something, ranging from a first prize to the wooden spoon, which was awarded to the team that placed last,” said Charté Joubert, the Club President.

This annual event serves as a fundraising project to raise money for the club and its members, but they also opened their wallets and hearts to help the blind bowlers who will be participating in the National Championships in George later this year with the spider event.

Elsie Grobler focussing on getting it just right.

Charté explained, “Before the event starts, everyone who wants to participate, places money in a jar, and then we place a big spider on the bowling green. Each player gets to roll one ball, and the player who is closest to the spider wins a prize. We managed to raise approximately R500 today.”

She added that FNBC is one of the smaller bowling clubs, with only about 43 members, and said, “We would love to grow our membership and will welcome new members with open arms – young and old. Bowling is not just for the older generation, there are a lot of younger people who are also actively involved in the sport. You will not only have the opportunity to make new friends while participating in this sport, but it is also a great way to stay fit.”

The club hosts games on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and they offer fun days on Sundays and public holidays. Charté also said, “The fun days are not only for members – visitors are also welcome. For a fee of only R20, they can come and enjoy the day and see what we have to offer.”

Charté said that they also hire out the venue for weddings, birthday parties and other events. “We have kitchen, braai and bar facilities on offer,” she said.
