Roodepoort rider crowned as new King of the Whip

A new king was crowned at the annual King of the Whip event

 

The crowd were left speechless as motorcross riders were flying through the air in an attempt to be crowned as the 2018 King of the Whip champion.

The competition, presented by LW Mag and Monster Energy took place at the Biker’s Warehouse in Northriding, where some of the country’s top motorcross (MX) and freestyle motorcross (FMX) riders gathered to compete head-to-head for the 2018 title, but there could only be one champion. With a display of big and stylish whips, Dallan Goldman was crowned as the new King of the Whip in front of thousands of screaming fans.

The huge 20 metre by eight meter landing area gave riders the opportunity to push their limits, resulting in an exciting and closely fought whip contest. Riders had to compete in four qualifying rounds where they had to showcase their whip skills for the judges and fans. Three two-wheeled motorsport legends – Brendan Potter (FMX), Richie van der Westhuizen (MX) and Brent Le Rieche (Trials) – had the difficult task to eliminate riders, as only 13 could compete in the semi-final. Riders were judged on style, amplitude and variation.

As the sun set, and the lights came on, the semi-finalists took to the course in a last grasp attempt to be on of the six to go through tho the final. The crowd was treated to 15 minutes of adrenaline fuelled mayhem, as these riders gave it their all with an an insane display of the biggest whips, a host of styles and variation.

The previous year’s champion Alastaitr Sayer (FMX), Caleb Tennant (MX), Camz Odendaal (MX), Dallan Goldman (FMX), Grant Frerichs (MX) and Neels van Niekerk (MX), impressed the judges and secured their spot in the final. Each rider had five jumps to claim the title, and with all of them having their own style and variation of whips, it was an extremely close and exciting final.

Dallan claimed the crown, as well as the R20 000 cash prize. First timer Grant claimed second place and Alastair finished third.

Ryan van der Spuy, event organiser concluded with the following words, “The time and effort that went into making this event possible was worth ever second and all expectations were exceeded. I just want to thank the sponsors, everyone involved and the fans. It was a privilege to watch the riders put on such a great show – this event is for them.”
