Athletics star Anaso Jobodwana highlights meeting at Ruimsig Stadium shortly after Bolt visit

South African 200m sprinter Anaso Jobodwana will be kicking off his 2018 athletics season at Ruimsig Stadium in the first of three inaugural Athletix Grand Prix meetings.

Anaso Jobodwana announced himself to the world when he represented South Africa at the 2012 London Olympics where he carried the flag all the way to the 200m final.

Jobodwana further cemented his name among the future greats of South African athletics when he became the first South African to break the 20-second barrier in the 200m.

He achieved the feat by running a 19,87-second race, earning himself a bronze medal, and in doing so becoming the titleholder of the fastest 200m time in South Africa at the time.

He has since seen the record broken by 400m world recordholder, Wayde van Niekerk who ran the 200m in 19.84 seconds last year.

Jobodwana has also tasted success in the 100m, when he won gold at the World University Games in both the 100m and 200m in 2013.

Jobodwana feels that kicking his season off at Ruimsig falls perfectly into his plans for 2018.

“I know that when I break the 10-second mark, I will easily be able to beat my 200m best and reclaim the national record. Running the 200m at the first Athletix Grand Prix Meeting fits in perfectly with my plans to get back into the shape where I am running fast again and feel comfortable doing it,” said Jobodwana.

“I’m excited about running at Ruimsig. It will be good to race again and I am looking forward to seeing who will line up with me.”

Jobodwana has not had the best hand dealt to him when it comes to injuries – but is looking forward to running injury-free.

“Running injury-free is an amazing feeling. Now I have the time to perfect my technique and at the same time run some really good competitive races. The Athletix Grand Prix Meeting on 1 March is perfect for me in terms of timing.”

Jobodwana’s race at Ruimsig comes little over a month after Jamaican sprinting legend Usain Bolt paid the Ruimsig Stadium a visit for the Puma School of Speed on 29 January.
