Roodepoort Rugby Club set to tackle 75th year

Roodepoort Rugby Club has been one of the top clubs in Gauteng for a long time, and in 2018 they celebrate their 75th year.

What lies ahead in Roodepoort Rugby Club’s jubilee is eagerly anticipated, as this is their first year with the Roodepoort Athletics Stadium as their home ground.

As most would know, they spent the majority of their rich history at Rand Leases Sports Grounds, where they had many spectacular achievements.

From winning the President’s Cup in 1947 to becoming champions of the Golden Lions Rugby Union (GLRU) Pirates Grand Challenge (PGC) in 2013 and even winning the Assupol Cup in 2011, very few opposition sides left Rand Leases with a win under the belt.

In their 72-year tenure at the grounds, it would become a fortress which they sadly had to say goodbye to in 2016 after their lease expired and was not renewed.

They then spent the following two years using the Hoërskool Roodepoort facilities, where they were welcomed with open arms.

The club managed to finish among the top six of the PGC in 2016 and 2017, and also host yet another successful schools tournament during their time at the high school.

Last year the Poorte U/18 side remained unbeaten throughout the year, with their highlight of the year being an 80–7 mauling of a Lions IPT team.

They have since accepted Roodepoort Athletics Stadium as their new home which, some would say, is the fitting location for a club of their stature.

It should be noted however, that for the month of January, players will still be practising at the school.

They will kick off their year when training begins at 6.30pm on Monday, 15 January at Hoërskool Roodepoort.
