The Roodepoort parkrun needs you

Looking for a fun way to stay fit?

Every Saturday morning at 8am, more than 500 sweaty bodies gather at the Len Rutter Park in Florida for their weekly 5km workout.

Runners are required to complete two laps, but not to worry, you do not have to be the fastest on the route. The parkrun is for everyone, no matter your age or fitness level, as participants run at their own pace. Best of all – it is free!

The race is not for humans only as you are most welcome to bring your furry friend along.

Bruce Fordyce, who won the Comrades Marathon a record nine times, was the founder of the first-ever parkrun in Africa, which took place on 12 November 2011. The race was run at Delta Park, Johannesburg, with only 20 runners competing.

Five months later the number of participants had grown exponentially, and a parkrun was started at Len Rutter Park.

The race’s organisers are volunteers from the community, and all you need to do to participate, is register on their website. You will be sent a barcode you need to bring along to each race.

Your barcode will be scanned after you have completed a race, which will enable you to follow your progress on the website. Without your barcode your time will not be recorded.

If you would like to participate in the parkrun, or become volunteer, visit their website at www.parkrun.co.za or send an email to roodepoorthelpers@parkrun.com.
