Junior canoeists’ river introduction

Young rowers attend an Introduction to Rivers workshop at FLCC

The Florida Lake Canoe Club (FLCC) recently hosted an Introduction to Rivers Workshop for junior paddlers, teaching them how to handle fast flowing waters, currents and rapids.

The workshop was attended by young paddlers (aged eight to 18 years old) who participate in the Gauteng Canoe Union school league races, and they thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Daniel Roberts was one of the juniors attending the workshop.

Jennie Dallas from the FLCC said, “Being such naturals at learning new adventures, both the junior and adult learners enjoyed the workshop. They learned an enormous amount, including how to swim and recover in fast-flowing water as well as mastering a number of skills and boat control.”

The coaches based at the FLCC are recognised for their teaching skills, making learning to canoe as well as mastering river skills more enjoyable and much easier than expected.

“Learn to canoe programmes are available at the FLCC and the lessons take place on Sundays from 2pm to 4pm. Children are introduced to canoeing at no cost during their first year,” said Jennie.
