Archer excels in Namibia

Archer on top of her game

Star archer, Magdel Willhelm, has continued her rise towards being the best in her sport. The Inyala Archery Club member recently competed in Namibia at the Africa All Star Archery Championship. Archers from not only South Africa and Namibia but also the Zimbabwean and Botswanan national and development teams competed for top honours.

South Africa had an A and B team alongside their development team and Magdel was the Centre Shot of the B team. The teams participated in seven categories, three of which were bullseye targets and four were 3D targets.

Magdel led her team to second places in both categories, beaten out to the top podium by Namibia.

“It was my first time in Namibia and I enjoyed every second of being there. I made so many friends from the other teams as well as from my own. We went on game lodge trips and go-karting,” she said.

Club coach, Magda Wilhelm, said she was proud of Magdel and all the other archers for working hard in training.

“Everyone seems to be enjoying their archery and the atmosphere is vibrant and positive. I want all the archers to be successful and become ambassadors for the sport in their schools and communities. I would like to especially encourage girls to take up archery as they are a rare breed in the sport but are just as good as the boys, if not better. Archery is not just a male sport,” she said.

Magdel aims to be one of the best archers in the country and the experience she gained from the championship will aid her in reaching her goal.

“It is not easy to reach the top,” she said, “because there are better archers out there. But I know that to be better I have to train hard in practice and improve my concentration levels.”

Magdel will be implementing what she learned from the championship in the first week of October when she travels to Port Elizabeth to compete in the inter-provincial championships and the national competition.
