Young chess team impresses at Gauteng champs

They reached the semi-final round of their age category where they lost against Carel de Wet Technical High School.

 

The Maragon Private Schools chess teams have had great success recently. Earlier this month, the U/13 chess team participated in the Gauteng Chess Championships. It was held at the University of Pretoria’s Mamelodi Campus where 965 players from the province competed. Maragon’s team competed against 24 other teams and finished the competition in fourth position overall in their age group.

Juveshan Pather, Byron Grove, Emma Jacobs, Kerri-Ann Naiker, Rachel Jacobs and Onweng Angura represented the school in the U/17 age category, .

The format of the competition was Swiss 60/60, which means that they played five rounds of up to two hours each. The Maragon team drew the first round against Hoërskool Sasolburg and won the next three rounds against Hyde Park High School, Freedom Community College and Hoërskool Dr Johan Jurgens respectively. They reached the semi-final round of their age category where they lost against Carel de Wet Technical High School. This meant that they finished the championships in fourth position among the 17 league winners in the province.
