Zandpruit Sports Forum rises against all odds

Nhlanhla Nkosi, the founder of Zandspruit Sports Forum has a dream – for Zandspruit to have its own multi-purpose centre.

The organisers of Zandspruit Sports Forum have given themselves a pat on the back after hosting a successful youth soccer tournament which was supported by the provincial government.

The competition, held at the local sports grounds on 9 September, saw a score of clubs participating for the trophy.

The founder and chairperson of the forum, Nhlanhla Nkosi, shared all the exciting highlights of the tournament which saw Golden Drifter Football Club emerge victorious.

“It was really a successful tournament because it had a huge impact on the parents, who were happy that their children are kept busy in the community,” he said.

All the teams looked stunning in their different kits which were sponsored by the office of the Gauteng MEC for Economic Development. Nhlanhla added that the kit, the trophy and the medals, all of which were provided by the Gauteng Legislature, uplifted the spirit of the youngsters.

Nhlanhla shed light on the forum’s objectives. “The forum was started in 2011 and was formally registered as a non-profit organisation in 2013. Our aims are to ensure that all sporting codes are visible in our ward and to see our young players participate in 2022 Common Wealth Games,” he explained.

He also added that one of his big dreams is to have a multi-purpose centre in Zandspruit where all sporting codes can be represented.

The forum is currently affiliated to the Mogale City soccer and netball league. Nhlanhla said that league matches are played every weekend and the teams also participate in tournaments every three months.

Nhlanhla told Northsider that his mission is to help keep the youngsters off the streets and away from the alcohol and violence that are so prevalent in Zandspruit, which is on the outskirts of Johannesburg and dominated by poverty and a lack of proper services.

The chairperson also expressed his thanks to all the sponsors from government offices and the local ANC Zone 14 branch for assistance.
