Pre-season cricket heats up

Pre-season warm-up match for Florida Cricket Club

Cricket clubs are still fine-tuning their teams for the upcoming season and Florida Cricket Club is no different. Their senior team enjoyed a great workout recently when they faced Old Edwardians Cricket Club in a pre-season friendly. Florida captain Deen Kimmie won the toss and decided to field first.

The bowlers had a tough time as the batters of Old Eds got stuck in at the crease and familiarised themselves with conditions. This allowed their team to score a credible 279 runs for a loss of seven wickets in 50 overs. Florida’s best bowler was Charles Ingman, who took two wickets at a cost of 42 runs. Michael Perold, Ahmad Patel and Vantonio Fisher took one wicket each.

With a target set, it was Florida’s turn in the middle, with openers Aaqil Salie and Jason Onslow. Aaqil did not last long at the crease, being bowled for a duck after four balls. Next to bat, Junior van Rooyen, was back on the sidelines after 10 runs, when he was caught in the field.

Although it was looking tough for Florida, Jason was keeping the scoreboard ticking and was joined by team captain Deen. The duo posted a 90-run partnership which steadied Florida’s innings. Jason was caught out for 60 runs off 75 balls. Charles joined his captain in the middle and together they had a 75-run partnership before Deen was caught out for 81 runs off 111 balls.

Charles did not last long either and was out a few balls later with a score of 29 runs. The rest of Florida’s batting line-up weren’t able to resist the pressure from Old Eds, and the team only reached 241 runs, losing by 38 runs. Nevertheless, they should be pleased with the way they performed.
