Schools MTB Leauge final heats up

MTB League excites fans with Magalies backdrop

Gauteng’s mountain-biking enthusiasts were out in full force, representing their schools in the third Spur Schools MTB League.

The Gauteng region had 864 rider entries at the event – 264 more than last year. A total of 60 schools participated.

In the Sub Junior Boys’ and Girls’ (14 years) categories, Ian Els and Marjone Strydom were the respective winners. In the Youth Boys’ and Girls’ (15 years) categories, Jeadon Terlow and Natalie Long were the victors. Hennie van Wyk and Monique du Toit triumphed in the Youth Boys’ and Girls’ (16 years) categories. In the Junior Men’s (17 years) category, Keagan Bontekoning rode off with the laurels, while Marc Pritzen won the Junior Men’s (18 years) category. In the Junior Women’s (17–18 years) category, Thana Groenewald was victorious.

Regional event coordinator Deon Steyn said the day was spectacular. He was very proud of the number of entries received and the quality of the riders.

“One of the notable highlights was getting to race on the scenic cross-country course built in the Magalies Mountain range.

The course demanded a fair amount of cross-country skill from the riders, as well as a great degree of fitness as they were introduced to long climbs right from the word go.”

The Spur Mountain Bike League Inter-schools Final wraps up this season on 7 and 8 October in Magaliesburg. Schools go head-to-head on race day and the race moves away from the individual rider-focus to a team-focused race. Each school strives to qualify for this part of the League.

A cash prize of R10 000 is up for grabs and will be awarded to the winning schools in each age category. The primary and high schools finishing top of the points log at the end of each season will receive the Region’s School Champion floating trophy.

Entries are open for the Gauteng final which will be held at St Stithians High School in Randburg on 16 September.
