Princess Primary soccer team conquers Gauteng

Team’s achievement big honour for school

“Their achievements have placed our school on the map as a soccer-playing school in Gauteng,” said Mpho Hlalele.

He is the coach of Princess Primary’s U/13 soccer team, which was recently crowned as the provincial champions. “This team has been playing together since they were U/11s. They have grown together, and developed into a team that played very well,” Mpho said.

The team was also crowned as the winners in the Roodepoort schools’ soccer league.

Their journey started at the D12 championships held at Princess High School three weeks ago, where they were crowned district champions. They proceeded to the second round, which was held at the Greenhills Stadium in Randfontein, where they walked away as the Cluster district champions.

With this achievement, they qualified to participate in the provincial championships that were held at General Smuts High School in Vereeniging. Here they won all three their games, and were crowned the U/13 Gauteng School Sports Soccer Champions. “The competition worked on a points system, and the team ended top of their log with nine points, to become the best team in Gauteng,” a proud Mpho said.

He wanted to thank the players’ parents, members of the Student Governing Body and the entire staff of Princess Primary for their support of the players throughout the tournament.

The school’s principal, John Sithi, echoed the coach’s sentiments and added, “We are very proud of the players and coach and recognise all the role-players who contributed to this achievement. It is not easy to be crowned as the Gauteng’s champions, as the competition is very tough, but our team persevered and pulled it through. I am sure that, if there was a national and international competition as well, we would have been international champions,” he said, beaming with pride.

He concluded by saying, “I would like to challenge the Department of Education to make more funding and resources available for primary school sports to ensure grassroots development and better the quality of the competition.”
