Boxer gets helping hand

Mitch Steyn, who turned professional earlier this year will be getting into the ring against Ripformla Noah at the Trilogy Boxing Festival. The fight will precede the Gauteng title fight between Michael Mokoena and Tebogo Malose. The BRD Sports Academy boxer will be backed by Pizza del Forno Featherbrooke as he fights in a top-tier tournament next month.

“I found out I’ll be fighting next week and since I never back out of a challenge, it’s been exciting. The pressure makes me train hard and work even harder.

Since my last fight, I am much more focused. I turned pro in March and its been a crazy ride due to injuries but I’ve worked through them and persevered. I have lost a bit of motivation at times but I know that this fight will be a game-changer,” said Mitch.

Pizza del Forno Featherbrooke owner Nelson Gouveia said his aim in sponsoring Mitch was to give him and others the same chance to succeed in life as he was.

“It all comes from discipline. Giving these guys an opportunity will open doors for them, which will then open more doors. I do not only help out in boxing, I also assist those who need it most and can make a positive contribution to society.”

Mitch’s trainer, Manny Hernandes, is positive that come Spring and the boxing festival, his fighter will be in prime condition to represent the West Rand.

“We are grateful to the business community for coming out to help the fighters. Unfortunately the West Rand does not have any tournaments but we want to change that in the near future. We have to find a way of giving back to our sponsors and network. We worked with Unleashed for the tournament next month, where fighters from different areas will participate. Training is not easy due to travel commitments but it is slowly falling into place. Mitch has been running well and sparring too. I am positive that by the time the match day arrives, he will be ready,” he said.

The Trilogy Boxing Festival, which takes place on 3 September, will have 10 bouts. The venue will be the Old Portuguese Hall in Turfontein.
