Maragon hockey girls bring home the gold

Maragon's U/14 and U/15 hockey girls outplayed the competition to win the Noordvaal Trophy.

Hard work and talent lead the Maragon Ruimsig U/14 and U/15 hockey girls to victory and the Noordvaal Trophy.

During the weekend of 3 to 5 August, both sides took part in the prestigious Noordvaal Trophy tournament, which brings together all the league winners from various regions all over the north of South Africa, including Limpopo, Mpumalanga, North West, Eastern and Northern Gauteng. Each team had won the playoffs in their own region to attend this tournament.

Maragon hosted the U/15 tournament, while the U/14s travelled to Nelspruit for their matches. The U/14s played their initial pool game against local rivals Krugersdorp High, winning 6-0. They then went on to play teams from other provinces. The U/15s had a difficult opening game against rivals Hoerskool Florida, losing 3–1, but they did not lose a game thereafter.

Both teams struggled in the pool phase of the tournament, losing one game and coming second in the pool, but still making the quarterfinals. After both winning their respective quarterfinal playoffs, the teams breezed through their semifinal matches. Both teams played in their finals, winning 4–0, and were crowned champions of Noordvaal, receiving gold medals and a trophy.

“We are ecstatic with the victories we have had this season. Our girls are determined to show the world that they are the best,” said the master in charge of girls’ hockey, Marc Richardson.

Maragon has a proud tradition of success in girls’ hockey, from winning the Waterstone Festival and Noordheuwel Prestige tournaments, to producing dozens of provincial representatives. They are growing from strength to strength with the hope of dominating the West Rand.
